Johnson City Transit System's "XTRA" is a curb-to-curb, demand response transportation service for the mobility impaired in Johnson City. The JCT "XTRA" service area is the corporate city limits of Johnson City, TN, or 3/4 mile of a JCT fixed route, whichever provides furthest service to the JCT patron. JCT provides this service in addition to its regular fixed route bus service. Curb-to-curb service means the JCT vehicle stays on public streets and areas, and does not enter private property. For safety reasons, patrons in wheelchairs must be loaded by backing the wheelchair onto the vehicle lift (with patron facing away from the vehicle), and must allow JCT drivers to secure their wheelchair once loaded into the vehicle. JCT "XTRA" is available to persons unable to use JCT's regular bus service due to mobility limitations. For an individual to be certified as "ADA Paratransit Eligible," an application for the individual, which includes a medical certification, must be completed and submitted to JCT.   It will take JCT approximately three weeks to process a completed application after it is received. Eligibility criteria and applications are available at the JCT office: 137 West Market Street, Johnson City, or via mail by calling (423) 434-6265.

JCT provides service to the hearing impaired via the TN Relay Center. Hearing impaired callers, using a TDD, dail 711 or 1-800-848-0298, and hearing callers dial 711 or 1-800-848-0299.

JCT "XTRA" is also available to visitors to the JCT service area, who present documenation that they are ADA Paratransit Eligible in the jurisdiction in which they reside, or who present proof of residence (in another locality) along with proof of disability if disability is not visibly apparent.  Visitors with this documentation may utilize JCT "XTRA" for 21 days during the year, beginning from the date of their first JCT paratransit trip. 

JCT "XTRA" is provided utilizing a small bus or van, equipped with wheelchair lifts (or ramps), grab rails, and low steps to accommodate riders with special needs.

JCT "XTRA" service is available during the hours of JCT Fixed Route operations: Monday through Friday, 6:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:15a.m. to 6:15 p.m. The fare is $1.20 per person one-way and $2.40 round-trip if located within 3/4 mile of the fixed route service area. Outside of this area, the one-way far is $3.00. These fares reflect service requested with JCT one day in advance; same day service, based on space available, is $5.00 one-way.
